EPA NATIONALLY QUALIFIED
ELECTRONICS RECYCLER

Recycletronics - EPA Qualified Recycler

MOLAM International awarded EPA contract.

The U.S. EPA has awarded MOLAM International, owner of Recycletronics, a federal contract to help all federal agencies properly dispose of computers and other used electronic equipment. MOLAM is one of only seven qualified recycling contractors in the U.S. for the Recycling Electronics and Asset Disposition (READ) services, and one of only two companies that has been qualified nationally. MOLAM is also the only EPA qualified recycler in Georgia. The Government Wide Acquisition Contract (GWAC) provides federal agencies with a reliable way to properly recycle and dispose of obsolete electronic equipment. This ensures that federal e-scrap is disposed of in an environmentally proper manner and that data destruction is completed to government specifications.

The U.S. government buys seven percent of the world's computers which comes to almost $60 billion for information technology equipment, software, infrastructure, and services. The government disposes of approximately 10,000 computers every week, a significant number of which are ending up in storage closets, warehouses and landfills, or overseas, where environmental standards are generally lower. If mishandled, toxic chemicals like lead, mercury, chromium, cadmium, and beryllium can be released into the environment. This complex waste stream poses challenging management issues and potential liability concerns for federal facilities. Reuse, recycling, and proper disposal can keep tons of pollutants out of landfills and the environment.

Under the contract, MOLAM evaluates each item and its components, and then, in decreasing preference:
  1. refurbish and resell them, using the proceeds to offset costs;
  2. donate them to charitable causes;
  3. recycle as much as possible; and
  4. properly dispose of the remainder
MOLAM maintains an audit trail to the equipment's final destination to document reclamation and recycling efforts. The contract maximizes revenues from usable electronic equipment currently in storage through a share-in-savings (SiS) program. Under SiS, MOLAM attempts to identify opportunities to save costs associated with recycling efforts and share those savings with federal agencies to offset recycling costs.

The government-wide recycling contract helps federal agencies meet requirements of Executive Order 13101, "Greening the Government through Waste Prevention, Recycling, and Acquisition."

From the EPA READ website:

To date, the most successful task order has been the efforts put forth by Molam, Inc. to properly dispose of over 20M lbs. of electronics on behalf of FEMA for the recovery efforts taking place in the Gulf Coast region as a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
The following Powerpoint summarizes the efforts and accomplishments under that task order with photos.
